In 1826, in honor of Field Marshal Rumyantsev on one of the squares of St. Petersburg was the obelisk.
Thanks to him in due course for the area got the name Rumyantsev, and in 1836 it was officially awarded this title.
S1939 to 2001 area It was called in honor of Taras Shevchenko, the Ukrainian poet and painter, as he lived and worked at the Academy of Fine Arts, located in front of the square. In 2001 the area returned the historic name and the name of Shevchenko was named elsewhere
Near the area is very narrow street of St. Petersburg, confined to the south area, -. Repin Street. Beside Rumyantsev Square is also the eponymous garden, in which there is the famous obelisk, as well as a bust of Suvorov and Repin.
