History of the Botanical Garden has its roots in 1712, when from Moscow to St. Petersburg on Crow Island moved Apothecary order.
This establishment zavedalo all medical and pharmacy business. In 1714 Peter I established Pharmaceutical Garden, where grown herbs and unusual plants, and the island became known as Crow Aptekarsky.
By 1823 the number of unique and exotic medicinal herbs so increased that the Apothecary Garden was transformed into the Imperial Botanical Garden. Despite the great flood of 1824 destroyed most of the plants, to the mid-19th century, the collection was the largest in the world and has about 15,000 species of plants. Botanical Gardens moved to the Ministry of the Imperial Court, and turned into a research center. Greenhouses were built, which are mainly drawings preserved to this day, as well as build a home gardener and botanist main house, a pond and a gazebo. Constructed building of the Botanical Museum and the Palm greenhouse, and then the Herbarium and Library.
In many galleries were destroyed and part of the heat-loving plants died during the war. In 1940 the Botanical Institute named after Vladimir Komarov was established.
