The preceding creation of the “Requiem” by Verdi experienced a series of years, serious loss of people dear to him: his father, the great librettist Piave and Rossini. On the occasion of the death of the last Verdi planned a joint project with other composers writing Requiem Rossini memory. By November 1869, the anniversary of the death of the great master, was created considerable musical material, but the project did not take place.
In 1873, died an outstanding writer and humanist Alessandro Manzoni, which is a big fan of Verdi was for many years. Verdi Requiem decides to write their own and dedicate it to the memory of the writer.
Premiered in San Marco cathedral in Milan, in 1874.
