State Museum of Political History of Russia was founded as the National Museum of the Revolution of October 9, 1919 by the decree of the Petrograd Soviet of Workers ‘and Soldiers’ Deputies.
Founders of the idea of the museum became the main leaders of the Bolshevik Party, the populist movement, representatives of humanitarian intelligentsia. The museum began its work by 11 January 1920.
State Museum of the Revolution was the first in the country of historical and revolutionary museum. By the mid-20s, he had a unique collection of revolutionary banners, a rare collection of leaflets of various political parties, posters and other printed works of the time.
In accordance with the modern idea of development in August 1991 by the Ministry of Culture of the USSR, it was decided to convert the status of the museum and rename it to the State Museum of political history of Russia. Since 1992, the museum moved to the jurisdiction of the Ministry of Culture of Russian Federation.
State Museum of Political History of Russia is one of the few museums that carry out the documentation and exhibition show the processes of political, economic and social life in Russia XIX-XXI centuries.
