Palace Square

Palace Square Palace Square, the main St. Petersburg area, included in the UNESCO World Heritage List.
It was founded November 5, 1704 during the construction of the Admiralty fortress shipyard. Initially it was used for storage of ship timber construction, anchors and other pripasov.S 1712 to 1717 there was a Marine market, the unused area is overgrown with grass and turned to the Admiralty meadow. In 1721 on the orders of Peter I had laid three streets, set the direction of the whole scheme of the construction of St. Petersburg, Nevsky and Voznesensky Prospekt, Gorokhovaya Street and a section Admiralty meadow into three parts. As such, the area existed before the advent of the Winter Palace, or rather, to Catherine II’s order from 1788, in which all the buildings on it were built on a notional arc, and the Alexander Column was the crowning of the plan. Since the beginning of the 19th century Palace Square was the site of military parades and parades, in Soviet times, it was officially called Uritsky Square. Since the 1990s, there are regularly held concerts, annual sports and social events.
