Quarenghi was an Italian classicist architect who contributed a lot to building the Petersburg we all know now. He was the favorite architect of Catherine II and hence ran many projects of public and private buildings. Among those, one can name the Smolny institute, Mariinsky hospital, the Russian Academy of Science, numerous interiors of the Winter Palace and Hermitage Theater. The main salt of his projects was an extreme ability to make ensembles fit into the city environment.
